Creativity for Well Being
If painting, sculpting, drawing, scrapbooking or photography are hobbies of yours, you’ve been unknowingly promoting positive health while you create. There are more benefits of arts of crafts than just enjoyment, ranging from enhancing self-esteem and increasing brain productivity to even lessening the effects of serious health conditions.
Research has proved that doing arts and crafts is therapeutic and can improve the emotional, mental and physical health of children and adults alike. In children it helps in improving hand-eye co-ordination, enhances critical thinking skills and increases their concentration levels.

Broadly speaking art is a form to express one’s feelings and emotions through any object or medium like paper, music, colours, technology, magic, photography, dance, tending to your vegetable garden and so on. Art can be abstract, realistic, naturalistic, conceptual and inspirational.
Very often, I have found myself doing art/craft on my own and enjoying it, but nothing beats crafting as a group activity. It allows you to learn new skills, enhances your self esteem and it is also a great stress buster.
The best part is, when you finish a craft or a piece of art you can enjoy using it or looking at it for years to come. The sense of accomplishment and a prolonged sense of pride of having a quality piece that you created is priceless!
A few years ago when my daughter was eight I had organized an art party for her friends. We had a differently-abled artist to conduct the workshop where she made them paint a ‘Christmas Night’ on canvas. It was a 3 hours session along with snacks and the kids enjoyed every bit of it. Each of them carried the canvas back home as a return gift. It was a unique birthday party, celebrated in a way where the kids learnt a skill. The parents were thrilled to have discovered ‘the artist’ in their child. I am sure, it is a memory they will cherish forever!

There is no right or wrong when it comes to making Art or Craft. I believe that doing Art or Craft is equally important for kids, teenagers and adults. It is as natural as sunshine and as vital as nourishment. After all, Creativity is experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes and having fun.
